Welcome to Lifelong Wellness, Inc.

Here is a list of the great presentations that we have enjoyed in the past:

January 10, 2012 Our Presentation: The Merits of Daily Meditation Practice Janet Stemmer began as our new president of Lifelong Wellness in January 2012. Our thanks to outgoing president Linda Mullin Welch for her two years as president; she will continue to support Lifelong Wellness as a member of the Board of Directors. We welcome two new members to our board, Doug Barry and Lauren Eadline. Thanks for stepping up. And thanks to our continuing bo...ard members: Pam Bush, Nancy Horvath, Bill Gazitano, who takes care of our newsletters and website, MaryAnn Stockton, Treasurer, replacing Rhett Allen, who did an excellent job. Thanks to all. To set the tone for the new year, Janet was our lecturer for January, discussing the merits of a daily meditation practice. Meditation connects us to that deeper world inside; an anchor on the ocean of life. Even a few minutes a day creates that space, that doorway, that allows healing and new discovery. For a few minutes, even when we think nothing happens, something happens. Our rational mind expects instant bliss, instant understanding, instant everything. In meditation we gently offer a moment for a deeper presence to unfold. Several short introductory exercises of looking inward including using tools from the Tibetan tradition of Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, methods provided by David R. Hawkins, and the sacred movements of G.I.Gurdjieff were practiced or demonstrated. Janet has studied various spiritual traditions over the years while working days as a CPA. After many years studying A Course in Miracles and travel to Tibet and India, Janet lived with a spiritual community living the teachings of G.I.Gurdjieff. She returned to Utica almost ten years ago to care for family and continues to explore and discover deeper meaning in everyday life.

November 8, 2011:  Nutritional Myths: What Should We Eat, Really?
Elizabeth Szlek

Anyone living in America today has been hit with any number of conflicting ideas on just what we need to eat to stay healthy. In addition, we are all bombarded by information concerning psychiatric disorders and medication. Many have decided they need to fix their problems by taking mind-altering chemicals. It is no wonder most of us are confused! During this talk, I will look at some of the prevailing myths that seem to rule our dietary and mental health decisions. After years of research and study, I believe I have found the truth about food, nutrition and mental health. We will briefly look at how drugs affect the brain, how nutrition affects the brain, and what our bodies and brains need to function properly. Be ready to be shocked!

Elizabeth Szlek holds degrees in several different fields, including music, hotel and restaurant management, theology and counseling. Since 1996 she has been the Director of The Door Counseling Center, located in Yorkville. She has taught at several universities, and has also taught international cooking, healthy cooking, and nutrition. She has written for many different publications, and is currently working on a book about nutrition and mental health. She is a member of the International Society for Ethical Psychiatry and Psychology, and the Weston A. Price Foundation.

October 11, 2011:  Voyage of Purpose ~ a True Story of Transformation

By relating one man’s amazing tale of triumph over death on multiple occasions, David Bennett brings a fresh perspective to near death experiences. Once a brash young commercial diver whose personal philosophy was “cut your swath through life to survive,” David was caught in a violent storm off the California coast where he drowned. While technically “dead,” he met beings of light, relived his life, and peeked into his future, resulting in a complete paradigm shift for him. Years later, he discovered he had stage IV lung and bone cancer—so advanced that his spine collapsed. Miraculously, he survived once again. This second close call taught him even more about living, loving, and how to find purpose in his life. David brings listeners right into the heart of the near-death experience, including the sensations of dying, being surrounded by the light, and meeting his Soul Family. Part lecture and part guide for achieving spiritual growth, this talk shows how to integrate the most traumatic of incidents into one’s spiritual path in order to live a more meaningful life. David Bennett, a spiritual activist who invokes empowerment with grounded and practical spirituality. He is a champion of the soul and a catalyst for transformation. Author of "Voyage of Purpose," a public speaker, and teacher. David has lectured at the International Conference of IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies) and shared his inspirational message at groups across the country including Lillydale. He has consulted for both radio and television including Oprah and Dr. Oz as a NDE resource, appearances including being filmed for NBC national news and PBS. David's articles appear in numerous magazines, blogs and papers. David had three transformative experiences each building upon each other. In 1983, he drowned and had a Near-Death Experience while the Chief Engineer of the ocean research vessel Aloha. He experienced a Spiritually Transformative Experience in 1994 when meditating in Sedona, Arizona. The third experience occurred November 2000, when David was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer that metastasized into his spine causing its collapse. Now in remission and retired/disabled David’s passion includes working with experiencers and cancer survivors to integrate their STEs along with writing. July 12, 2011: Presentation: "Causality: The Ego's Foundation" a film excerpt from the 2002 lecture series by Dr. David Hawkins MD, PhD

July 12, 2011:  Dr. Hawkins introduced his first lecture in the Sedona Series with an explanation of why he wrote the book, Power vs. Force.  He explained the development of the Map of Consciousness and discusses the various levels and characteristics of human consciousness, from below 200, where everything is detrimental to life, to above 200, where that which is true, valid, pro-life, and spiritually whole contributes to life. Dr. Hawkins discusses the higher levels as well and how a true guru or teacher has to calibrate over 540, the level of Unconditional Love. He gives a brief description of what may be experienced at the levels above 540, and on up to 1,000. The world of duality was discussed and how the research seemed to bring up a polarity similar to good and evil. At first it seemed like two different worlds, but then it was found that creation is continuous and evolutionary. Also, there are no "either-or's" but instead variations in qualities, e.g. more light or less light. He further explained the Map of Consciousness and the characteristics and experiences that occur along the scale. He delves into the concepts of positionality and duality and the roles they play in our lives. He also explains how to change our perceptions. He stated that the purpose of the lectures is to share how we come to the knowingness of the presence of God. He talks about the nature of God in a way that is easily understood and defines the spirit, the field in which it moves, and the effect of Karma. He lets us know that life is continuous, that its source is Divinity, and provides the proof. This lecture provided the foundation for all the lectures that follow and is very helpful for understanding the advanced information. It concludes with questions from the audience being answered by Dr. Hawkins. We will show the first hour.

June 14, 2011:  The Forgiving Mind:  Our Gateway to Happiness by Dr. William Yoder   Happiness is the goal and motivation of everything we do. Happiness is the ground of all true health. It is the wellspring of unconditional love and genuine compassion. It is our guide on our spiritual journey of awakening. Happiness is our natural state of mind. We don’t have to make ourselves happy—we just have to stop making ourselves unhappy. This involves, in the words of A Course in Miracles, “removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.” An essential part of removing those blocks is the practice of forgiveness. But how we understand the idea of “forgiveness” is critical. The typical definition of forgiveness actually reinforces the self-deception that makes us unhappy. We need to see forgiveness in a new light for it to be deeply and truly effective.  Dr. Yoder provided an exciting exploration of forgiveness and happiness, which will include practical exercises and guided meditations, as well as time for questions and discussion.
Dr. William Yoder has a doctorate in philosophy, ten years of university teaching experience and an immersion in both Western and Eastern philosophy. He is the author of two books: Lighted Clearings for the Soul, and The Happy Mind. He also has a doctorate in chiropractic, and he and his wife, Dr. Mary Yoder, have practiced at their holistic health center in upstate New York for the past twenty-five years. In addition, they conduct workshops and speak on the topics of happiness, health and healing, and human potential throughout the United States.
You can visit Dr. Yoder’s website at www.TheHappyMindBook.com.

May 10, 2011: “Devotion: The Way to God Through the Heart - a film of Dr. David R. Hawkins' lecture We showed the first hour of this film and had time for discussion.  A psychiatrist by training, Dr. Hawkins had become an atheist when he saw how much suffering was in the world. But when he was close to death at age 38, he called out, “If there is a God, I ask him to help me now.” The state of enlightenment replaced normal consciousness.. “The person I had been no longer existed.” Ten years later he gave up his New York city practice and moved to Arizona and spent seven years in meditation and study. Using the technique of kinesiology, he developed a scale of consciousness, a framework for measuring the conscious energy of events, places and persons. His first book discussing this framework was Power vs. Force, published in 1995, followed by several more books explaining higher states, the nature of the ego, In 2002, he began a series of lectures to outline the many topics he was able to research using kinesiology and his map of consciousness. Devotion: The Way to God Through the Heart is the ninth lecture of the series. 1995 Power vs Force 2001 The Eye of the I 2003 I, Reality and Subjectivity 2005 Truth vs Falsehood 2006 Transcending the levels of Consciousness 2006 Discovery of the Presence of God 2008 Reality, Spirituality and Modern Man 2009 Healing and Recovery

February 8, 2011:  Kundalini Yoga Presentation - Linda Welch

Yoga itself is a mystery wanting to make itself known. That which “Yokes” us gets our attention and that is what yoga sets out to do. Really get your attention. To get you to pay attention starting with the body. Kundalini Yoga is not your every day Hatha strain of yoga. What makes Kundalini Yoga different? Its intent, its actions, its breathing techniques, its lifestyle information and most of all its mantras and sound current. It is set up to give you a vast experience of the essence of you. It is set up to allow you to experience as Yogi Bhajan would say, “Your depth and dimensions, your altitude and your attitudes, your known and your unknown.” Kundalini Yoga covers everything from adjusting your nervous system, to balancing your chakras, to improving your immune system, to giving you mental clarity, to things that make no sense while you are doing them but afterward you feel great or totally released, or deeply connected. Linda studied with Gurmukh Khalsa, and has been practicing Kundalini Yoga since 2005. She will demonstrate easy to do exercise that can be done sitting in a chair.

November 14, 2010:  Using Negatives in Positve Way JOANNE DE STEFANO
Joanne has been a well-known watercolor artist and instructor. for more than 40 years. She has exhibited in many one-woman and group shows, but she says the best ‘ribbon’ she has earned is to be able to help others because of what the ‘master painter’ has done to change her life.
In her mixed-media watercolors, she uses various gels and papers, tears up completed, ‘unsuccessful’ paintings and collages the pieces back together in a different design and composition to convey what is essential for us to do in our lives as we turn negatives into positives. No life experience or painting should be thrown away but rather CHOOSE to learn from it.
Joanne has recently completed three self-published paperbacks: “The Nicotera Family…and Then Some”, which is a story of her life in East Utica, New York as a member of the Nicotera Family who were founders of the ‘Nicotera’s Bakery’ on Bleecker Street. The other is a compilation of her life’s experiences in the form of the book entitled, “Prose, Poetry, and Memoirs.” The third is a twelve-step anxiety- recovery guide, relating to Joanne’s own experiences and her victory in overcoming agorophobia, resulting in her successful career as a watercolor artist.
She quotes, “Life and art alike create many messes. We become so focused on the ugly ‘stuff’ that we don’t see the good things happening in the midst of it.Trying to duplicate the ‘Master’s’ Creation is a challenging task, but when the viewer appreciates the talents He has given me, I am very blessed.
I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.

*More On Homeopathy from April 13, 2010:

Homeopathy is a natural medical science that treats illness by the stimulation of the body's own healing response. This action is based on the Law of Similars discovered by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann some 200 years ago. Dr. Hahnemann, the founding father of homeopathy, began by treating patients with large doses of natural substances. While the patients improved, they were sometimes aggravated by such strong medicines. Thus the use of infinitesimal doses began and the result was a prompt, gentle, lasting improvement.

Homeopathy views the individual as a whole person and the symptoms and signs from the body, mind and spirit are all regarded when choosing a homeopathic remedy. Homeopathy provides a treatment which is tailored to the individuality of each person. This treatment is not aimed at a single organ or part of the body but rather at the vital force, the energy which maintains life in the individual.

Homeopathy is commonly used all over the world, but it is particularly developed in Europe where it originated In England, for example, there are hospitals which are exclusively homeopathic. In France, every pharmacy dispenses homeopathic medicines, 39% of the population uses homeopathic medicines and 33% of the family physicians integrate homeopathy into their practices. In Germany, 20% of the physicians use homeopathic medicines and homeopathy is also very popular in India, where it is used by 55% of the medical doctors, and in Australia, Mexico, and throughout South America. Canada, like the United States is discovering the unique advantages of homeopathy, and medicines can be found in the largest pharmacies.

The manufacture and sale of homeopathic medicines are regulated by the FDA. Homeopathic medicines were recognized as official drugs by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in 1938. For this recognition as official, the medicines must be found in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS). The HPUS is considered by the FDA as one of the official compendia (reference guide). In addition, the marketing of homeopathic medicines is controlled by the FDA's Compliance Policy Guide of 1988 which provides guidelines for labeling and the sale of medicines.

Some time ago. we all enjoyed this special treat:

Thai Pudding- Here is the recipe
A Thai version of the classic creme caramel dessert that is super-easy to make, melt-in-your mouth delicious, and healthier than traditional creme caramel!
This recipe calls for coconut milk instead of cream (coconut milk contains good fats that actually lower your cholesterol), so if you're lactose-intolerant, this is a good dessert choice for you. It also makes an elegant dessert to serve guests or take to a party. Best of all, this recipe can be whipped up and in the oven in less than 10 minutes!

Prep Time: 8 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients: • Serves 4 • 1 cup coconut milk • 2 eggs • 1 Tbsp. sugar • 1 tsp. vanilla extract OR 1/4 tsp. pandan essence/paste (available in tiny bottles at Asian/Chinese food stores) • 1/4 cup (or more) maple syrup or table syrup • pinch of salt • a little canola oil (or other healthy oil) for greasing ramekins

Preparation:1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease ramekins with oil. 2. Beat eggs with an electric mixer for 1 minute. 3. Add the salt, sugar, vanilla OR pandan paste, and coconut milk and stir until well blended. (If you are using pandan essence/paste, note that it will turn the dessert a bright, tropical green.) 4. Pour a little syrup into the bottom of each ramekin (enough to cover the bottom + up to 1 Tbsp. more). 5. Now pour egg and coconut mixture into each ramekin until 3/4 full. (Do not stir - syrup will naturally remain at the bottom of the ramekin.) 6. Place ramekins in a large glass baking dish or on a deep-sided roasting pan. 7. Pour some water into the bottom of the baking dish or pan - until water reaches at least 1/4 way up the side of the ramekin. 8. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a fork inserted into the pudding comes out clean. Allow to cool, then place in the refrigerator until ready to serve. 9. To serve, run a knife around the inner rim of each ramekin (to loosen pudding). 10. Overturn the ramekins onto individual dessert plates. The pudding should fall out easily, with the syrup naturally dripping down over the coconut custard. 11. Serve with green tea or strong coffee.
• Thai-style Creme Caramel will keep (covered) in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
